History of Kohl’s Frozen Custard

In April of 1996, after a year of planning and building, the first Kohl’s Frozen Custard and Jumbo Burgers opened for business on Market Street in Wilmington, North Carolina.  It was an apprehensive time for owners and operators Jeff and Heidi Kohl.  The new business serving fresh frozen custard and short order burgers and fries was not a nationally known chain.  However, the inquisitive and brave residents of Wilmington decided that frozen custard was worth a try and once they tried it they liked it.  Gradually infrequent visitors became regular patrons and told their friends about the new place. Wilmington liked frozen custard and began to look forward to the monthly Flavor of the Day calendar.  Each day a different flavor of the day was produced in addition to the standard chocolate and vanilla. Although frozen custard was a large portion of the business Kohl’s burgers were gaining in popularity, also. Thanks to loyal customers Kohl’s Frozen Custard was on its way.

A year after Hurricane Fran our family owned business opened its second store serving only frozen custard in the remodeled old Wrightsville Beach post office behind Wings and across from The Trolley Stop.  Beach goers welcomed us warmly.  In 2000 our next endeavor was to open a larger store in Monkey Junction so we could accommodate more customers.  We also opened a store in Greenville, N.C. (this location is now closed).  The store at Wrightsville Beach was sold as a franchise to Jody Duea and in 2003 it was sold again to Steve Kennedy and Ken Ubertini.  They have renovated the store to add food along with frozen custard and are continuing to satisfy residents and vacationers at Wrightsville Beach.

We have been in business 11 years and we are looking forward to many more years of serving frozen custard.  We’ll be looking for you.  Come and see us.
